W&M iGEM Activities Booklet
The 2015 iGEM team created a teaching booklet with molecular and synthetic biology activities for students K-12. The 2017 iGEM team aims to improve on the idea and make the curriculum widely available to other iGEM teams and synthetic biologists.
What's new?
After consulting with the STEM Education Alliance (from the William & Mary School of Education), we changed the booklets to make them better teaching tools. The biggest difference is that we split the curriculum into three parts: K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. These are the standard school levels in the United States, and splitting the curriculum into smaller parts will make it more convenient for iGEM teams who want to educate students of different ages. We also finished incomplete activities, edited the booklet from grammar and spelling, and replaced certain activities that we felt were not relevant to synthetic biology education.
Our main change to the 2015 curriculum is the means of distribution. Our past iGEM teams did not make the curriculum public. We hope to make this teaching tool available to anyone who wants it and to gain feedback in order to continue improving the curricula. If you are interested in helping us improve the 2017 activities booklets, please contact as at [email protected].
